"Cheshire-Puss," she began, rather timidly, as she did not at all know whether it would like the name: however, it only grinned a little wider. "Come, it's pleased so far," thought Alice, and she went on. "Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?"

"That depends a good deal on where you want to get to," said the Cat. "I don't much care where—" said Alice.

"Then it doesn't matter which way you go," said the Cat.

"—so long as I get somewhere," Alice added as an explanation.

"Oh, you're sure to do that," said the Cat, "if you only walk long enough."

Being lost is not a physical situation; it is a state of mind. So is traveling. Even though many people are caught up with where to go, what to see, which activities to do, and where to eat, that is not what makes traveling significant. Essentially, traveling is about adventures and experiences. Traveling is self-discovery.

迷失并不是身处的状态,而是思想的情境。旅行亦如是。尽管人们总是纠结该去哪,应该看什么,进行何种活动,以及吃什么,而这些恰不是旅行的意义所在。归根结底,旅行关乎冒险与体验。旅行是自我探索之旅。


It all started on a boat trip from China to Japan. When Singaporean-born Nelson Ng traveled with his family, they always traveled in tour groups. Traveling for Nelson meant scheduled days crammed with activities and shopping. He never really liked traveling. That changed when he took that forty-eight-hour ship to Japan. “There is nothing to do, there is no casino… you are just left to do your own thing. That was where I actually felt like I was traveling.” In a sense, this was the first time he traveled. It was the first time I decided I wanted to go on a trip. Before that I was always moving around a lot for school or for work, but I never really went somewhere because I wanted to go somewhere.”

这一切要从中国到日本的一次游轮旅行开始说起。当来自新加坡的Nelson Ng和家人一起旅游时,他们总是跟着旅行团。旅行对Nelson来说意味着被各种活动和购物安排得满满当当的日子。他从来没有真正爱上过旅游。直到他登上了那艘48小时直达日本的游轮。“在那无事可做,也没有赌场……你可以不被打扰做自己的事情。那时我才感觉到我是真的在旅行。”某种程度上来说,那才是他头一次旅行。“那是第一次我决定我想登上旅途。在那之前我总是因为就学和工作到处搬家,但是我从来没有因为想去一个地方而到那里。”


That boat trip changed everything. It made Nelson appreciate traveling again, and it inspired him to make a travel magazine. He aspired two things: to make people fall in love with traveling again, and to create a platform where travelers can share their stories. “Initially I wanted to write,” Nelson explains, “and as I worked on it I realized unconsciously I was making a magazine that was different from other travel magazines.” Instead of making a travel guide, he focused on the emotional side of traveling, the experience of traveling.

那次游轮之旅改变了一切。它使Nelson重新欣赏起旅行这件事,更促成他创作了一本旅行杂志。他有两个预期:使人们热爱上旅行,创造一个旅行者可以分享他们故事的平台。“最初我想自己写,”Nelson解释,“我尝试过后意识到我已经在无意识中创作一本有别于其它旅行杂志的期刊了。”相较于制作一本游览手册,他专注于旅行中情感的部分,旅行中的经历。


And so LOST was born. A visually stunning bilingual travel magazine, in an unconventional way. There are no recommendations, no maps, no hotels, no Top 10 places to visit in Shanghai. The stories and photographs in LOST are submissions by voyagers from around the world. They aren’t tourists who visit places to see certain sights, they are travelers who go out and explore the world. I am having lunch with Nelson, founder and editor in chief of LOST. I ask him what traveling means to him. “I feel the really valuable part of travel is the experience and what it makes you think about,” he explains. “Stepping out of your comfort zone is traveling for me. When things are too comfortable and you’re not really experiencing anything, it is pointless.

由此《Lost》诞生了。一本非常规的、视觉效果极佳的双语旅行期刊。既没有推荐,没有地图,没有酒店,没有“上海必去的10个景点”。《Lost》中的故事和照片都来自全世界各地的旅行者。他们不是去看某些景点的观光客,他们是走出去探索世界的旅行者。我和《Lost》的创始人、主编Nelson吃午饭,我问他旅行于他意味着什么。“我感觉旅行中真正有价值的部分是体验,以及其使你产生的思考,”他解释道,“从舒适区踏出去于我即是旅行。当一切都过于舒适而你没有真正体验任何事物,那样是没有意义的。”


So, what is the point? What do we gain? “Personally, I learned so much about how other people live and think, and that made me realized who I am. On every trip, I grow so much.” From this perspective, perhaps LOST is one of the few magazines that actually deserves the name of travel magazine: it is not about tourism, it is about traveling.

那么什么又是意义?我们又获得什么?“个人而言,我从他人处事和思考中学习了很多,而那让我意识到我是谁。每次旅程中,我都成长许多。”从这个角度看,可能《Lost》是少有的能担得起旅行杂志这一名号的期刊:这和观光无关,和旅行相关。


Even though I love traveling, I told Nelson, I never read travel magazines. He told me he doesn’t either. If you’re looking for practical information, you can use the internet. On the off chance you aren’t able to get online, you can always use your Lonely Planet to navigate your way through the unexplored.

尽管我热爱旅游,我告诉Nelson我却从来不读旅行杂志。他说他也如此。如果你寻找的是实际的信息,上网即可。没有网络的情况下,你也总是可以通过《孤独星球》来获取通往未知区域的道路。


LOST plays a different role. “Magazines now are timeless. The contents are not news… It brings people together.” Magazines and books create communities of people, the medium being a symbolic representation of their shared interest. LOST represents the adventurers, the explorers, the travelers of this world… because traveling is not a physical activity: it is a state of mind.

《Lost》扮演了不同以往的角色。“现在的杂志是没有时间感的。目录也不再是关于新发生的事情……它将人们带到一起。”杂志和书籍创造了人类社区,该媒介成为了代表他们兴趣的符号。《Lost》代表这是世界上的探险家,探索者,旅行者……因旅行不是身处的状态,而是思想的情境。
